Singapore Airlines Plots Major Australian Expansion

Tue, 08 Aug 2023

Singapore Airlines’ newly unveiled global expansion strategy will see it adding an extra 4,700 seats to and from Australia, starting from March next year, achieved by a combination of extra services and larger aircraft.

We will see two of its current Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on Sydney routes, replaced with Airbus A350-900s, marking a return of First Class to the route to SQ241 and SQ242. This change will allow customers the option of travelling in either First Class or Suites on all four of Singapore Airlines daily flights between Sydney and Singapore. Melbourne will also see an increase in capacity with a fifth daily flight being added from November, pushing operations to the Victorian capital past pre-covid levels.

In Adelaide, Singapore Airlines will increase capacity by replacing the A350-900 medium-haul aircraft on SQ279/SQ278 with a Boeing 787-10, adding 238 seats each week to the South Australian capital.

“Travel demand into, and out of, Adelaide continues to remain robust and the decision to change aircraft to deliver more seats underpins our commitment to deploy the right aircraft with the right mix of cabin classes and capacity,” Singapore Airlines regional Vice President South West Pacific, Louis Arul remarked.

“The 787-10 hosts the same cabin product as the A350-900 medium-haul aircraft it is replacing, so customers will be able to continue to enjoy our medium-haul lie-flat business class seats as well as our ergonomically designed economy Class.”

The airline will also operate its 303-seat widebody Airbus A350-900 to Cairns four times per week, delivering an extra 442 seats each week from the end of March. Although services will reduce from five-weekly to four-weekly, the upgrade from the Boeing 737 MAX 8 will still allow a capacity upgrade along with an increase of more that 47 tonnes of cargo space. This is the first time that Singapore Airlines has utilised a wide-body aircraft for passenger services on this route in over two decades.

In Darwin, daily services will return to pre-covid schedules with SQ251 and SQ252 operating a 154-seat Boeing 737-8 from 31 March, while Perth will see the resumption of pre-covid schedules too, along with the addition of a fourth daily service.
