United Airlines Polaris Lounge Review: Houston (IAH)
Learn more about this popular Business Class lounge in Houston!

For travellers flying United Polaris Business Class through Houston, the Polaris Lounge in Terminal E promises a premium ground experience. In this Polaris Lounge review, we look at location, seating, shower facilities and dining. I was lucky enough to visit the lounge during two very different time periods (the quieter midday period and the busy evening period). Keep reading to find out how the lounge compares during these two shifts.

Location & Access: Easy to Find, Exclusively Polaris

The United Airlines Polaris Lounge at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is located in Terminal E. The entrance sits directly beside the United Club Lounge, so it is important to follow the signage carefully. It could be very easy to confuse the two lounges by their entrances if you were not familiar with or paying attention. After checking in at reception on the ground level, guests take the elevator to Level 4, where the lounge opens into a bright, modern space with impressive apron views.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

The Houston Polaris Lounge is visually impressive. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with great views of the United aircraft on the tarmac below. The lounge is filled with natural light, and the design feels contemporary and refined. During my lunchtime visit, the lounge was quiet, spacious and genuinely relaxing. However, on my second visit after 5 pm, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. The lounge filled quickly, and seating became harder to secure.

While the lounge is large, it's not immune to peak hour pressure, especially as the lounge is accessible for both domestic and international passengers, and the volume of domestic flights within the United States is far greater than what we are used to in Australia. That said, outside peak departure waves, the atmosphere is calm and well-suited to business travellers wanting to work or unwind.

Shower Suites: A Strong Highlight

One of the strongest elements in this Polaris Lounge review is the private bathroom/shower experience. After arriving from a 15.5-hour long-haul flight from Australia, a shower was very much needed. I headed straight to the private shower suites. Given that this was around lunch time and the lounge was quiet, I was fortunate to access one immediately. The rooms are very spacious and feel clean, modern and well-maintained.

Each suite is spacious and includes:

  • Walk-in shower
  • Large vanity
  • Toilet
  • Towels and slippers
  • Personal amenity items

For long-haul travellers, this feature alone elevated the overall experience. However, there are only 6 private shower rooms, which would fill up very fast during busier periods. On my way home during the busy evening period, I didn't attempt the showers as there were noticeably significantly more people in the lounge. But given that I had just hopped off a shorter domestic flight, I didn’t feel the need to shower during this time.

Seating & Work Areas: Well Designed but Competitive at Peak

The lounge offers multiple well-designed seating zones for different needs. You will find private armchairs with individual tables and lamps, pod-style seating, communal tables and a large central bar area. Power access is excellent. There are ample power points and USB ports throughout the lounge, making it easy to work comfortably. From a business traveller's perspective, this is a major positive.

However, during the evening rush, the availability of these ideal work seats becomes limited. These seats filled rapidly, and I suspect that leaving my seat just to go to the bathroom would have meant losing it.

Bar Experience: A Sophisticated Touch

The central bar is one of the design highlights of the Houston Polaris Lounge. A fully stocked back shelf with a wide range of spirits, it feels more like a hotel bar than an airport lounge. There were multiple staff members behind the bar, and you were able to order made-to-order cocktails or any drink that you desired.

For those wanting a pre-flight drink in a stylish, refined area, sitting at the bar with a friend or colleague would be an enjoyable experience in this lounge.

Food & Dining: Buffet and À La Carte Restaurant

Dining is where the Houston Polaris Lounge positions itself above many standard business class lounges. The buffet offering is well presented and provides a solid selection of hot and cold dishes. During my visit, options included chicken, pasta and vegetables, along with a fresh salad bar featuring seasonal fall selections. There was also a dessert station with fruit and small sweet options.

The buffet was enjoyable and offered a good variety. While it may not dramatically differentiate itself from other strong international business class lounges, was a solid dining option for those who need a quick meal.

The standout was the dedicated à la carte restaurant. Full-service dining in a business class lounge is increasingly rare and is more commonly associated with First Class facilities or leading international carriers. During my second visit, I chose to dine in the restaurant, which was a pleasant change of scenery. As I had only recently eaten on my previous flight, I only ordered a glass of sparkling wine and their Signature Polaris Burger. The meal was enjoyable, and the service was warm and professional. The restaurant seats approximately 40 guests and fills up quickly in the evening, so you may need to wait during peak times or opt for the buffet.

Additionally, spaced throughout the lounge in the different seating areas were some self service station with some cool refreshments, snacks and fruit for those who wanted a lighter bite to eat and some water.
