Qatar Airways Expands to Western Sydney International Airport

Qatar Airways is taking off at WSI, with competitive fares proving a powerful draw for travellers willing to go further for better pricing

Qatar Airways has announced plans to increase connectivity to Australia with flights to Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) in 2027. The expansion will improve accessibility for the approximately 3 million people living in Sydney’s outer west and southwest, connecting them to more than 170 destinations via its Hamad International Airport (DOH) hub.

The new route will commence on 15 December 2027, making Western Sydney International Airport Qatar Airways’ seventh gateway in Australia, alongside Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), Perth (PER), Adelaide (ADL) and Canberra (CBR). The new route will provide more options for Australian travellers and strengthen the airline’s ability to connect Australia with the world. Destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas will become easier to reach via Doha.

Tickets go on sale from 19 December 2026. Secure your spot and enjoy the Business Class product flying from WSI by getting in touch with an Airfare Specialist.

The Route

Qatar Airways will operate the approximately 14-hour journey between WSI and DOH three times per week on its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Qatar Airways flights to Western Sydney International Airport (WSI)

Starting 15 December 2027, flights from Doha will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday:

  • Doha (DOH) to Western Sydney (WSI) – Flight QR906: Departure 01:40; arrival 23:45.

Flights from Western Sydney will operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday:

  • Western Sydney (WSI) to Doha (DOH) – Flight QR907: Departure 16:10; arrival 23:00.

One of the biggest advantages of the new route is its timing. For Australian passengers, finding convenient connecting flights when travelling to Europe and beyond can be challenging. Qatar Airways has taken this into consideration by utilising one of WSI’s key competitive advantages: its 24-hour operating capacity. This creates more opportunities for convenient flight schedules, giving travellers greater choice and flexibility while connecting Sydney’s outer west to the world in new ways.

We should also consider the broader growth opportunity for WSI as new airline services are introduced. Despite the perception that travellers will always choose the airport closest to them, bookings across multiple carriers suggest that customers are willing to travel further when there is a compelling incentive. For example, while travellers from Sydney’s eastern suburbs may traditionally be less inclined to use WSI due to the additional travel time, competitive fares could help overcome this perception and encourage greater uptake.

Business Class Flight Features

Business Class passengers on Qatar Airways’ newest route will enjoy 42 award-winning, spacious Qsuites, designed to provide optimal privacy and comfort. The Qsuite’s unique design also allows two or even four travellers to share the journey by opening adjoining suites into a ‘double’ or ‘quad’ arrangement. The product has continued to set the standard in premium air travel, maintaining its position as a market leader for nine consecutive years. It is one of the many reasons we ranked the airline number one in our Best Business Class Awards 2026 by Flat Beds. Qatar Airways also received a top ranking in our Best Business Class – Meals category, demonstrating its continued commitment to the in-flight dining experience.

How to Book

The new route will commence on 15 December 2027, with tickets going on sale from 19 December 2026. The anticipated route can also be booked using frequent flyer points, with rates starting from:

  • 70,000 Avios (the points currency of Qatar Airways)
  • 119,500 Virgin Australia Velocity Points
  • 143,000 Qantas Points

Despite the perception that WSI is too far to travel to, bookings across multiple carriers suggest that this is not necessarily the case. With the right incentive, passengers are willing to make the extra journey, particularly when competitive fares or attractive flight options are available.

While the first scheduled flight is still some time away, Business Class seats booked with points may be limited. Get in touch with an Airfare Specialist to learn more about booking this new route in Business Class and how you could use your frequent flyer points to your advantage.
