The New Era of Delta One Business Class Is Coming To Australia

Delta unveils its most impressive Delta One Business Class redesign in nearly 30 years, introducing elevated dining, luxury amenities and improved connectivity for Australian travellers.

The update to the Delta One Business Class experience was recently announced by the airline’s Vice President, Jeff Moomaw. Moomaw explained the airline’s dedication and commitment to improving the passenger experience, especially for those travelling from Australia and Auckland. For Australians travelling to the US, there is no denying that the journey can be long and, at times, uncomfortable. Delta Air Lines has recognised this in the Australian market and has improved its onboard dining experience, drinks selection and in-flight amenities to reflect this billion-dollar commitment.

Delta is set to debut its updated premium offering in Australasia sooner than expected, starting with Auckland on 24 October, followed by Brisbane on 26 October, and Sydney and Melbourne on 3 November. A shift of this magnitude will, without doubt, have a lot of consumers talking. We often find that the North American airlines struggle to compare to the high level of service and premium amenities that many of the Asian and Middle Eastern carriers offer. This commitment to ongoing improvements is certainly a positive sign, and we are excited to see how Delta positions itself in the Australian market and how its reimagined products and experiences hold up alongside its international competitors.

Delta’s Vice President for APAC, Jeff Moomaw, states:

“It is starting in Los Angeles, and one of the first markets to have this new service… is going to be Auckland, followed two days later by Brisbane, and the final launch for all of the Pacific [including Sydney and Melbourne] out of LA is going to be on November 3.”

A reimagined experience born from the voices that matter most-its customers. Delta has drawn on customer feedback and input from its onboard teams to reshape and improve its Business Class travel products. The Delta One upgrades form part of a broader refresh of Delta’s premium travel proposition, with the revised Delta One experience expected to roll out across the airline’s global network “through around the first quarter of next year”.

The New Era of Delta One Business Class: What to Expect Onboard

The biggest transformation in the redesign? The onboard culinary experience. Moomaw states, “The number one bit of info that they [customers] gave back is that they don’t want whatever the new modern, flashy food experience is. It’s just too much. It was inconsistent.” He later states, “What customers wanted most is the classics, in an elevated format.”

The revamp was shaped by esteemed culinary chef Simon Hulstone, who, drawing on his accolades and 20 years of experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant The Elephant in the UK, brings a fresh perspective and an elevated dining experience. The menu takes a fresh approach to familiar favourites, elevating them with refined touches, such as the Wagyu Burger with caramelised onion, a personal favourite of Delta Vice President Moomaw. The new options will be presented on redesigned tableware incorporating Delta’s signature logo. The tableware is designed to improve presentation and make meals easier to serve.

There will also be a lighter food selection for those who prefer it, with the introduction of the Caesar salad for the first time. Not only do the main meal options reflect regional and local influences inspired by the US, but so do the desserts, with fun, traditional sweets on offer, such as sundaes, dairy-free sorbet, and fruit and cheese platters featuring California producers.

Delta’s commitment extends beyond just the food options, with the airline now allowing passengers greater flexibility and control over when they eat. Pre-selection options will also include lighter meals and choices for passengers who would rather maximise their sleep than participate in the full meal service. Furthermore, Delta has extended its entrée pre-selection window to 18 hours before departure, six hours longer than previously available.

The new wine program, developed by sommelier Andrea Robinson and SkyMiles members, features Napa Valley wines, reinforcing the airline’s ties to Californian production alongside international labels. Delta has additionally expanded its Champagne Taittinger partnership. Delta One will also introduce Blanton’s bourbon, while DASSAI 45 sake will be available on selected flights to and from Tokyo-Haneda.

Reimagined Delta One Amenities and Seat Comfort

A reimagined amenity kit that Vice President Moomaw states is “easily” his favourite one that they’ve had in years. Delta’s partnerships also extend to its bedding and pillow options, with new enhancements designed to improve comfort for travellers on long-haul flights. A sweet touch that Australian customers will surely appreciate. The Missoni partnership introduces a new bedding platform, featuring a “mattress pad that you can put across your seats,” Moomaw remarked. He later states: “You’ve got your traditional pillow; you’ve got a cuddle pillow; there is now another cuddle pillow, just in case you need that extra one for support.”

Seamless Baggage Transfers: Making Connections Through the US Easier

For Australian Business Class customers, a 12+ hour journey to the US is not easy, nor is it necessarily desirable. To top it all off, there’s the added stress of baggage transfers during connecting flights, a process that can be long, exhausting and, at times, incredibly stressful, particularly when unexpected delays or flight cancellations arise. Delta has responded by launching its Seamless Baggage Transfer service on its Sydney-Los Angeles route, aiming to make connections through the US easier and more seamless for Australian travellers.

So, what does that mean exactly?

Rolled out on its Sydney flights on Tuesday, the service allows checked baggage to be screened in Sydney before departure and reviewed by US Customs and Border Protection before the aircraft arrives in Los Angeles. Passengers connecting to another US destination can then head directly to their onward gate without collecting and rechecking their bags, a process Moomaw previously described as “just absolutely awful”.

He later states in relation to baggage transfers:

“You’ve got off a long-haul flight, and the last thing you want to do is wait for luggage, right? To have to collect it and then go visit someone else and recheck it back in. All you want to do at that point is just relax and get to your gates. Well, now you can. So it really does transform that travel experience.”

Further appealing to its Australian audience, the change extends to passengers who begin their journey in other Australian cities and connect through Sydney for their Los Angeles flight, improving the overall travel experience and connectivity for passengers. On the topic of connectivity, Delta additionally rolled out free, high-speed Wi-Fi across its international network last weekend, with Melbourne and Sydney being the first two routes in the Pacific to receive the service. Over the next few weeks, every Delta flight across the Pacific will have this operational, which is definitely becoming the new standard in the industry, especially with Business Class passengers in today's connected world.

What Does This Mean for Australian Travellers?

Delta Air Lines is not typically the first choice for the average Australian consumer when it comes to international flights to the US, with other airlines offering premium products and experiences that are more competitively priced and provide swifter journeys. However, we applaud Delta’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for the Australian Business Class market.

We’re excited to see how these changes enhance what can, at times, be a challenging journey to the US, while providing Australian travellers with a more seamless travel experience and greater opportunities for connectivity.
